2014 BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival Opens in Beijing

BNP Paribas is pleased to announce that the much-anticipated “BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival” will kick off in Beijing tomorrow (17 April). The four-day Festival aims to nurture the next wave of young piano virtuosos in China, providing them a stage to display their exceptional musical talent and identifying the new rising stars for the piano world. It also marks the celebration of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France for 50 years in 2014.

The BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival is organised by BNP Paribas and its affiliated charitable foundation, BNP Paribas Foundation, in co-operation with the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM). Being a leading global bank with strong commitment to corporate philanthropy, BNP Paribas has a track record in supporting different remarkable art and cultural events around the world.

The BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival 2014 features a strong line-up which includes performances by the renowned French-taught Chinese pianist, Mr Siheng Song, and six outstanding CCOM students (Peiru Han, Chuhui Han, Yu An, Jingwei Cui, Zhirong Liu and Boyang Yu) who have emerged after an intense selection and evaluation process led by a panel of CCOM professors and international music experts. The students are delighted to have a chance to play in the Festival together with Mr Song who is an icon of the younger generation of pianists in China. Mr Song’s remarkable technique and artistic achievements have won him acclaim around the world. His opening performance is a true highlight of the Festival.

At the press conference for the Festival today, Mr Laurent Couraudon, Country Head and Chairman of BNP Paribas China, said: “Through the BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival, we are proud to provide a platform for the young pianists in China to showcase their amazing talent and share the joy of music to the music lovers. BNP Paribas is keen to help nurture the young artists in China. We plan to make further contribution to promote China’s cultural development in the future.”

Mr Couraudon and Mr Cizhao Wang, President of the CCOM , also presented certificates and trophies to the six student-performers at the press conference, recognising their participation in this important musical event in China. Other renowned cultural representatives also present included: Mr Paul-Arnaud Péjouan, Artistic Director of the Festival Piano aux Jacobins and BNP Paribas ‘Rising Stars’ Piano Festival Mr Hongzhu Liu, Director of International Exchange Office of Central Conservatory of Music, Mr Ying Wu, Steinway Artist and professor in the Piano Department of CCOM, and Ms Shuman Li who was the first prize winner at the inaugural BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival in 2013. Being the champion last year, Ms Li has won a chance to perform at the world-renowned music festival, the Festival Piano aux Jacobins, which will be held in Toulouse, France, in September.

The BNP Paribas Rising Stars Piano Festival was first held in China in April 2013. It has swiftly won high praise for its artistic value from young musicians and music critics home and abroad. BNP Paribas and the BNP Paribas Foundation are excited to continue organizing this important and well-received cultural event this year.
